How to: Edit configuration files manually with Notepad++

We have a video tutorial on editing configuration files with Notepad++:

When editing configuration files, Notepad++ is one of the best programs to use. The traditional Notepad that is installed with Windows works, but is not ideal. Notepad++ offers many features that normal Notepad does not. Some features of Notepad++ include; easy spacing management, the ability to have multiple tabs open simultaneously, and many more!

To download Notepad++, please go here: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download

Once you have the latest version of Notepad++ installed, you can now edit configuration files with ease!

The most common type of file you will be editing is YAML (.yml). There is one VERY important part of YAML files. What appears to be "tabs" in the code are actually 4 spaces. Tabs are unrecognized and will cause errors in the formatting of the file.

After you have finished editing the configuration file, you can check your work by copy and pasting your work here: http://yaml-online-parser.appspot.com/. If there is no red text in the "Output" section, then you are good to go. Congratulations! If there is red text, that means there is an error. Be sure to check your work on the line that is incorrect.

Lastly, you must save changes and upload the file back to your server. To save, click "Save Changes" in the top right-hand corner. The most common and fastest way of uploading files to your server is by using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). For more information on this, visit FTP Guide - Windows. Otherwise, you may upload your file using the traditional File Manager provided with TCAdmin. Remember to overwrite the existing file and to always restart your server when finished!
