The Rust 'Darkness Falls' update is the Halloween 2026 event, running from October 22 to November 5. It brings Candy Hunts, roaming undead, buildable pet monsters, mysterious rifts, and seasonal cosmetics to the island. Twitch Drops and a Discord reward offer extra unlocks, with their own dates and eligibility rules.

A candy-collecting competition sounds pretty harmless by Rust standards. Then you remember who you’re sharing the server with.

Halloween adds a few distractions to the usual farming, fighting, and desperately trying to get your loot home. There are monsters to assemble and portals to investigate, but some of the rewards have much shorter availability windows than the event itself. Here’s what’s worth knowing before your next session.

#When does the Rust Halloween 2026 update end?

The Darkness Falls Rust update launched on October 22, 2026, and the Halloween event runs until November 5, 2026. That gives you roughly two weeks for the seasonal activities. However, don’t use November 5 as the deadline for everything:

  • October 23: The Twitch Rivals Spooky Backpack is available as a one-day exclusive drop.
  • November 1: The general Twitch Drops campaign ends.
  • November 5: The Halloween event and Zombie Wumpus claim period end.

The Twitch promotion and Discord offer have separate conditions, too. Playing the event won’t automatically unlock those rewards.

#How do Halloween Candy Hunts work?

A Candy Hunt starts roughly once every two in-game days and gives you three minutes to collect candy. The three players who collect the most receive special loot bags, but everyone else still has a reason to keep collecting.

Your candy can be upgraded for better loot, so missing the podium doesn’t make the run pointless. The reward list ranges from scrap to an M249 across the candy and loot bags. That’s a possible reward range, not a promise that your next bag contains a machine gun.

#Getting more out of those three minutes

Treat the hunt as a short collection run rather than another opportunity to get distracted halfway across the map. Put away anything you’d hate to lose beforehand, then focus on collecting while the timer is active.

Playing with friends? Decide whether everyone is chasing their own score or whether someone is watching for trouble. Spending half the event arguing over who gets the next piece of candy probably won’t help anyone reach the top three.

Most importantly, finish the hunt even when another player pulls ahead. Your collected candy still has value outside the leaderboard.

#What are the mysterious Halloween rifts?

The Halloween rifts are portals that appear at random locations across the island. There may be two possible explanations: cultists opening gateways, or a Cobalt experiment called R.U.I.N going wrong.

Neither sounds like a particularly reassuring reason to step inside.

For your first visit, treat preparation as insurance. Bring healing, food, and equipment you can afford to replace, and unload anything valuable before investigating. Going in curious is fine; carrying your entire evening’s progress through an unexplained portal is a different decision.

Server owners also get a setting for adjusting portal population, which we’ll cover below.

#How to build and control a Frankenstein’s monster

Those body parts you’re collecting have a purpose. During the event, you can assemble a pet monster using parts taken from scarecrows and mummies.

Following the monster-building instructions, the process is:

  1. Kill scarecrows and mummies to collect body parts.
  2. Gather a head, torso, and legs for your creation.
  3. Craft a Frankenstein’s table and place the parts inside.
  4. Awaken your monster, then press P to access its commands.

Once it’s awake, your monster can follow you, defend you when you’re attacked, and help fight enemies you direct it towards. It’s an actual companion for your Halloween travels, rather than something that just stands in the corner of your base looking unpleasant.

#How to change the pet-menu key

Already using P for another action? Facepunch provides this console command: bind X +pets

Replace X with the key you’d like to use. You can also change the binding through the in-game controls menu.

It’s worth checking that the menu works before heading out. Discovering your pet controls clash with another binding is much less annoying inside your base than during a fight.

#What Halloween skins and items are available?

The 2026 collection includes new decorations and an inflatable costume, alongside returning Halloween items. The new individual Limited store items include:

  • Three wallpapers: Cultist Tile, Manor Ceiling, and Derelict Wood.
  • Skull Wall Lamp: A skin for the Tuna Can Lamp.
  • Inflatable Alien Costume: Available in three decorative variations.

For anyone spending Halloween rebuilding their base’s interior, there’s also a Spooky Decor Bundle. It includes all three wallpapers and the Skull Wall Lamp, plus the bundle-exclusive Halloween Wreath and Halloween String Lights.

The Alien Costume is listed separately, so don’t assume it comes with the decoration bundle.

#Returning Halloween gear

The returning items section includes the purchasable Dracula Mask, which provides early-game head protection and costs 10 cloth to craft. Dracula capes and Wooden Stakes can be found on undead corpses.

Facepunch describes the Wooden Stake as an undead-specific tool that releases souls with a single strike and yields extra loot from remains. That shouldn’t be read as a claim that it instantly kills every enemy in Rust.

Several familiar skins return, too. The Hockey Facemask reskins the Metal Facemask, the Cultist Deer Torch reskins the starter torch, and the Baseball Bat reskins the mace.

Check the Rust Item Store for individual listings rather than assuming every Halloween item is included in one purchase.

#How to get the Halloween Twitch Drops and Zombie Wumpus

The event’s extra rewards come through two separate routes: watching Rust streams and claiming an eligible Discord offer. Neither works like collecting loot during a Candy Hunt.

#Twitch Rivals and the Spooky Backpack

The Twitch Rivals Base Invaders broadcast is scheduled for October 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. PT / 6 p.m. UTC.

The exclusive Spooky Backpack drop is available for that day only on the Twitch Rivals channel, starting with the main broadcast. The remaining general drops run until November 1 and can be earned through Rust channels.

Before watching, connect your Twitch and Steam accounts. Check the campaign’s viewing and claim requirements as well; the supplied announcement doesn’t specify a watch duration.

The important distinction is the deadline. The general campaign lasting until November 1 doesn’t extend the Backpack’s one-day window.

#Discord’s Zombie Wumpus Plush

From October 22 to November 5, 2026, eligible Nitro subscribers can use Discord Orbs to claim the Zombie Wumpus through the Rust Game Shop on Discord.

The plush is a deployable base decoration that supports placement, rotation, and stacking. Facepunch also says it provides 70% comfort when nearby.

This isn’t an automatic reward for every Rust player or every Nitro subscriber. Check the terms and Orbs requirements before planning around it.

#How to prepare your Rust server for Halloween

Before your squad jumps into the Halloween 2026 Rust update, give your server a check, especially when you’re organising a community session rather than simply joining an existing event.

A sensible preparation routine is:

  1. Back up your world and configuration. Do this before making update-related or plugin changes.
  2. Update and test before inviting everyone. Check that players can connect and that the Halloween activities you plan to use are working.
  3. Review your portal settings. Make deliberate changes and test the results rather than copying unexplained values from another server.

Facepunch specifically identifies this server variable for adjusting portal population: halloweendungeon.population

Start from your existing configuration and assess changes on your own server instead of assuming that more portals will suit every setup.

For a community Halloween night, Rust dedicated server hosting with Shockbyte (the official Rust hosting partner) gives your group its own place to play. Set expectations before the session, whether that means leaving Candy Hunt participants alone or accepting that absolutely nobody is getting a peaceful three minutes.

#What should you try first?

Start with a Candy Hunt to get involved without building your whole session around it. Keep the monster parts you collect, assemble a companion once you have the pieces, and save your first rift visit for when you’re equipped and ready to risk the trip.

Check the reward deadlines before settling into that routine, though. Halloween lasts until November 5, but the Spooky Backpack doesn’t.

And before stepping through a portal, make one last stop at your storage boxes. Whatever’s on the other side, it probably doesn’t need your entire scrap collection.
