How to Change the Difficulty of your Left 4 Dead 2 Server

Changing the difficulty can be a great way to make it easier for new players, or harder for returning players looking for a challenge.

Using In-game Voting System

Connected players can call a vote at any point while in-game to change the difficulty of the server.

  1. Once connected to your server, press ESC to open the main menu.
  2. Click Call a Vote.

  3. Click Change Difficulty.
  4. Choose between Easy, Normal, Advanced or Expert.
  5. Each player connected can now vote yes or no.

Via Admin Commands

It is also possible to change the difficulty of the server without a player vote, therefore you can use this method.

  1. Ensure you are set as an admin.
  2. Open console with ` key.
  3. Enter sm_cvar z_difficulty <difficulty>
    1. The values for difficulty can be Easy, Normal, Advanced or Expert.
