Holograms/floating text have become one of the most popular ways to mark locations, give players direction, or provide information boards on many Spigot/Bukkit Minecraft servers. Although there are a few different options to choose from when it comes to picking a plugin that provides hologram support, the most popular, and most compatible plugin is Holographic Displays.
Thanks to Holographic Displays, server owners can easily create any amount of holograms with the use of a few commands.
Installing Holographic Displays
Before you can install the Holographic Displays plugin, make sure your server is running a server type that supports Bukkit plugins. Spigot, Bukkit, and Paper are examples of server types which support plugins.
- Download the Holographic Displays plugin.
- Navigate to your control panel and Stop your server.
- Access your server files via FTP, we recommend using Filezilla.
- Navigate to the
/plugins
directory. - Upload the
HolographicDisplays.jar
file you downloaded in step 1. - Start your server.
Creating your First Hologram
There are plenty of variations in holograms that can be created. For this example, we make a simple text-based hologram. We highly recommend you visit the Holographic Displays wiki for more information regarding the types of holograms that you can create.
After the Holographic Displays plugin loads with the server, you will be able to use in-game commands to create holograms if you have the required permissions or are an opped player.
- In-game, position yourself where you'd like to create a hologram, then type
/hd create (name)
. - Enter
/hd edit (name)
to see how you can edit your new hologram. - Enter the command
/hd setline (name) (line) (text)
to override a specific line of text on your new hologram. - To add another line, you can type
/hd addline (name) (text)
.
Configuring Holographic Displays
If you would like to change common settings like the space between text lines, you can do so in the config.yml file. For more information about configuring the Holographic Displays plugin, please refer to this wiki page.
- Navigate to your control panel and Stop your server.
- Access your server files via FTP, we recommend using Filezilla.
- Navigate to the
/plugins/HolographicDisplays
directory. - Right-click the
config.yml
file, and click View/Edit. - Configure the plugin to your preferences.
- Save and upload your changes.
- Start your server.
