How to Install Sponge on a Forge Server

SpongeForge is a Forge mod based on SpongeAPI that lets you use Sponge plugins in your modded server. This can be useful for some servers as it allows for even greater flexibility and features on your server, although, it introduces new limitations and potential complications.

Important

When selecting a Forge version, it is ideal to install the recommended version shown on the SpongeForge download page. Below shows how to identify the recommended Forge version for a specific SpongeForge build.

Installing Sponge

If you haven't yet, you need to install Forge on your server. You can follow our guide here for steps on how to install Forge on your Minecraft server.

Please keep in mind that Sponge currently only supports a very limited amount of Minecraft versions, at the time of writing, the latest available version compatible is 1.16.5.

Step 1:

Download the appropriate version of SpongeForge for your Forge version

Locate and download your desired version of Sponge from their downloads page.

We suggest selecting their recommended version if you are unsure of which to choose.

Step 2:

Access your server's control panel and navigate to the Files tab.

Step 3:

Click the mods folder to open it

Step 4:

Upload your downloaded SpongeForge jar file

Step 5:

Start or restart your server if it is already running

Once your server boots up, SpongeForge will be installed and ready to go.
