How to Install GriefDefender on your Minecraft Server

Griefing is a form of disruption that can happen in Minecraft, it's a major worry for many server owners as it could lead to their server being destroyed and cause players to stop playing on the server.

GriefDefender is a paid Spigot plugin which aims to provide the best preventative measures for griefing on servers. It provides features such as database support, bedrock support, mod support, permission system, flag system and many others.

Important: LuckPerms is a hard dependency for GriefDefender meaning it's required to function, reference this article to learn how to install LuckPerms.

Paper/Spigot Installation

You will be required to upload the JAR file to the plugins folder within your server's FTP.

  1. After purchasing, download the plugin from the SpigotMC webpage.
  2. Access your control panel and Stop your server.
  3. Ensure you are using a server type that supports plugins, we recommend Paper.
  4. Start your server to generate the plugins folder, and then Stop it again.
  5. Access your server files via FTP, we recommend using FileZilla.
  6. Navigate to /plugins.
  7. Upload your GriefDefender JAR file.
  8. Start your server.

Sponge Installation (1.12.2 - 1.16.5)

You will be required to upload the JAR file to the plugins folder within your server's FTP.

  1. After purchasing, download the Sponge version from the GriefDefender Discord.
  2. Navigate to your control panel and Stop your server.
  3. Ensure that you have setup a SpongeForge server.
  4. Access your server files via FTP, we recommend using FileZilla.
  5. Navigate to /mods.
  6. Upload your GriefDefender JAR file.
  7. Start your server.
