How to Install Data Packs on Your Minecraft Server

We have a video tutorial on how to install a data pack on your Minecraft server:

Data packs are a feature available for Minecraft worlds in versions 1.13 and later. They can add or override existing advancements, structures, recipes, and more.

NOTE: The data pack system is a feature that is exclusively available to Minecraft Java Edition. To add similar customizations on Bedrock Edition servers, refer to this guide: How to Install Behavior Packs on your Minecraft Server.

Data packs can be added to singleplayer or multiplayer worlds, and the installation process is the same.

HOW TO INSTALL A DATA PACK IN YOUR MINECRAFT SERVER

  1. Download the data pack you would like to use. Your data pack should be a folder or ZIP file.
  2. Access your server directory and navigate to the /world directory. Depending on your server configuration, your server's world directory may be named differently.
  3. In the world directory, open the /datapacks folder.
  4. In your datapacks folder, upload the data pack you would like to install.
    • If the data pack is from Vanilla Tweaks, it will usually have UNZIP_ME as part of its filename. You must unzip the file first by right clicking it and selecting Extract All.
  5. Restart your server to apply the changes.

After installation, you may view and manage your data packs by using the /datapack command.
