How to Update Mods on Your ARK Server

When running an ARK server with mods, occasionally you'll need to update those mods to the latest version whenever a new version is released. This guide will show you how to update those mods on your ARK server.

As with all procedures related to deleting or modifying your server's files, it's advisable to create a backup of your server in the event that a required file is accidentally deleted. You can read our guide on how to do so here: How to Manually Backup Your Server

  1. Stop your server. This can be done by clicking the Stop button at the top of your server's console.
  2. Log into your server's FTP. We'll be using the web FTP accessible via the Files > FTP File Access section of the Multicraft panel, however, you can also use FileZilla.
  3. Once connected to your server's FTP, create a new directory called DANGER_DELETE_ALL. This directory is automatically deleted when the server is started and is the fastest way to remove large amounts of files from your server.
  4. After creating the new directory, click Back and navigate into the mods folder on your server. This is located in /ShooterGame/Content/Mods.
  5. Select the folders named after the mod IDs of the mods you want to update, as well as its matching .mod file. If you want to update every mod on your server, select every file and folder other than the ones named 111111111 (including the .mod file), CrystalIsles, Ragnarok, TheCenterValguero, and LostIsland as these are part of the base server.

The image below has been provided as an example of folders to select. Folder names will vary depending on the mods that you have installed, however, the specific files mentioned above are the same across all installations.
  6. Click the Move button at the top of the web FTP. If using an FTP client, you will have to move these folders and files manually.
  7. Change the target directory from /ShooterGame/Content/Mods to /DANGER_DELETE_ALL, then click Set All Target Directories to set the new location for everything you selected. After changing the target directories, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.
  8. After a few seconds, a new page should load up confirming that the files and folders you selected have been moved to the new location. Click Back to go back into the mods folder and confirm that the mods you selected have been moved.
  9. Start up your server! Your server will automatically remove the DANGER_DELETE_ALL folder upon startup, deleting all of the mod files you moved into that folder, then download the updated mod files.

After completing this process, your server may take a longer time to start up than normal as it needs to download and verify the new mod files. This is normal, and it's advised to be patient while your server updates everything. You can check on the progress of the server launch either using the console or by checking the server's responding status in the Steam server viewer.
